Chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) describes how the chirality of molecular species imparts spin-selectivity to various electronic processes. Conventional CISS materials rely on local chirality to influence electronic spin. The Evans Research Group will take a different approach, where supramolecular chirality will be used to influence spin-selectivity. This approach has the advantage that through synthetic design, the higher order structure and long-range chirality needed for efficient CISS can be systematically engineered. In addition to uses in CISS, the materials generated through this approach are expected to yield significant chiro-optical and magnetic enhancement that would be unavailable in purely covalent constructs.
